1. Will the LL-STB-1 fit on any ladder?

The standard LeveLok LL-STB-1 has a very unique design which enables it to fit any fiberglass, aluminum or wood ladder, up to and including a 375-lb duty rating. It is available in two models, one for aluminum and fiberglass extension ladders (LL-STB-1AL), and one for use on aluminum sectional ladders and wood extension ladders (LL-STB-1SL). The standard LL-STB-1 levelers are sold in pairs (one for each ladder rail).

Each leveler unit comes completely pre-assembled with mounting bolts and aluminum spacer plates installed at the factory. These spacer plates ensure that the leveler body does not interfere with the ladder rung protrusions or rivets on the outside rail of the ladder. These spacer plates give the LL-STB-1 its ability to fit over and around rivets, brackets and rung protrusions on all makes and models of ladders. In addition, each standard LL-STB-1 set comes with a drilling template and all retrofit hardware and instructions for mounting the levelers on virtually any ladder.

The installer simply removes the existing foot and tapes the template in its proper position (normally two holes above the first ladder rung, and one hole below the first rung).

After marking and drilling all three holes on both ladder rails, it takes only a couple of minutes to slide the pre-assembled units on and snug up the locknuts.

2. Is it okay to drill holes in my ladder? Won't I weaken it?

Yes, you can drill holes! No, you won't weaken it - in fact, installing the LeveLok Leveler on some ladders can even make them stronger!

Due to its unique design, the LeveLok Leveler bolts securely to the ladder rails, through three holes drilled on the neutral axis of the rail. This means the Leveler is mounted at the position of minimum stress. In addition, the Leveler spans the attachment point of the bottom ladder rung, and the Leveler's rigid design adds solidity to the ladder rail itself - similar to the principle that gives glue-laminated beams superior strength.

When drilling holes, be sure to follow the instructions provided with the unit, and keep two things in mind:

  • Always drill two holes above the first ladder rung. (Exception: The Wing "Little Giant" ladder series.)
  • Always install so that all spacer plates are flat and snug against the ladder rail.

That's all there is to it! If you follow these simple steps you will not weaken or change the duty rating of your ladder. (OSHA mandates compliance to this requirement on all ladder accessories.)

3. How long does it take to install a pair?

Once you have gathered the tools required (a drill, marker, a wrench or socket set, pliers and some masking tape), it will take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Time Saving Tip #1: If you have some "sawhorses" you can most likely reduce the installation time and make the overall process much easier.

Time Saving Tip #2: If you are installing more than one set at a time, you might try drilling all the holes first and then mounting the levelers.

Time Saving Tip #3: After drilling all holes, lay the ladder down on a sawhorse, so the right side and the left side are automatically in the correct position.

Time Saving Tip #4: Our templates are made of a hard material, which enables them to be used as a drill guide - saving the time of marking, and drilling individual pilot holes. Simply secure the template on the center line of the ladder rail with tape or clamps and then drill all three holes!

4. What will the LL-STB-1 do for me?

The obvious advantages are, of course, saving valuable time, providing increased safety, and saving money for your bottom line.

Some of the slightly less obvious advantages to using LeveLoks are:

  • The many built-in safety features for "ultra-safe" operation
  • The very high quality materials and design
  • The extreme precision achieved through state-of-the-art manufacturing methods
  • The strict Quality Control standards each and every LeveLok must pass before leaving our factory.

The LL-STB-1 was designed for people who insist on the absolute best equipment available and want their equipment to keep working for a very long time.

The LL-STB-1 was also designed to be easily serviced or repaired, so that if you should need to replace a damaged or worn part, it can be done easily and inexpensively by a qualified LeveLok dealer.

5. Will the LL-STB-1 restrict my ladder use in any way?

There are three considerations to keep in mind when attaching LL-STB-1 units to any extension ladder.

First, they will add a small amount of weight to the ladder - 2 to 4 pounds per ladder rail, depending on the type of ladder. This extra weight, which is added to the bottom of each rail, will add some overall stability to the ladder. Adding the units to the ladder rails also increases the width of the ladder at the bottom, giving it a wider stance that results in even more increased stability.

Second, this same increased weight will change the balance point when carrying the ladder horizontally. The center of balance will depend on the individual ladder, but it will be a little closer to the ladder bottom.

Finally, when LeveLoks are installed, your ladder can be set up on stairs which are at least 11-1/4 inches deep, giving you added versatility. (Of course, ladders without levelers should not be set up on any stairs!)

6. Will installing LeveLoks affect my ladder warranty?

Absolutely not! Because of the unique design of the LeveLok Leveler and its mounting system, the duty rating of ladders on which they are installed are not affected, up to and including a 375 pound duty rating. LeveLoks meet or exceed all OSHA and ANSI standards - and even the proposed standards. (For more detailed specs, visit our specifications page.).
